Motorcycle Safety and Training

Motorcycle safety is important whether you are a beginner motorcycle rider or have been riding motorcycles for fifty years.  Motorcycle safety is a requirement of every rider.  Motorcycle safety is all about seeing and being seen.

Training

Motorcycle safety starts with training.  Training for new riders is a must, and continuing training is highly recommended for the seasoned rider.  The foundation for a lifetime of safe riding is proper training.

What you learn through proper training can make a life-or-death difference.  Because it’s so important to motorcycle safety, this training qualifies the rider for insurance discounts. More than twenty states require a motorcycle safety training program for minors and 13 states have a graduated motorcycle license, restricting when cyclists can ride, on what kind of roads or whether they can have passengers.

The best motorcycle training program utilizes broad educational approach, providing the motorcycle student with both practical training, and classroom work.  Courses do an excellent job of training riders to avoid hazards and to respond appropriately when confronted with them.  Looking for a course that encompasses not only the theory of motorcycle safety but also the practice of the techniques that are taught with plenty of guided training in and out of the classroom is a good indicator of the quality of the course.

Helmet

A helmet protects a motorcycle rider’s brain, but also provides comfort. Research has shown that helmets are the most effective piece of safety gear for motorcyclists — protecting riders against head injuries.  Wearing a helmet is not a blanket cure-all for hazards that befall motorcyclists.  As far as helmets go, in 2007 about 42 percent of motorcyclists killed in accidents were not wearing helmets.  That means that 58 percent were wearing helmets and they were killed anyway.

Helmets are estimated to be 29 percent effective in preventing fatal injuries to motorcyclists and 67 percent effective in preventing brain injuries.

Motorcyclists

Motorcyclists are vulnerable to the road conditions and elements on their bike so special care and caution needs to be taken.  Motorcyclists need to develop their skills to read the road surface, to anticipate, avoid or control loss of traction, and watch for wildlife.  Wearing protective clothing and equipment serves as a three-fold purpose for motorcyclists by providing comfort, protection, and visibility.

To remain safe, everyone motorcyclists and motorists alike must take an extra moment to make sure we are watching out for each other.

For motorcyclists:

  • Get properly trained and licensed
  • Wear the appropriate safety gear

• Ride sober.

Conclusion

Motorcycle safety is a very important subject.  Motorcycle safety is all about providing riding enjoyment.  Motorcycle safety is everyone’s responsibility.

At the very minimum:

  1. Always wear a helmet.
  2. Wear other protective gear like chaps, gloves, boots, and a jacket.
  3. NEVER drink and ride.
  4. Be properly licensed
  5. Get training

Now get out there and RIDE !!
